Rotary Bulletin - January 26, 2012
O’Canada/Blessing/Breakfast
John
commenced our regular meeting with a posivite thought from Ghandi, stating “The difference between what
we do and what we are capable of doing would suffice to solve most of the
world's problems.”
VISITORS
Two
of Mount Allison University Rotoracts joined us this morning. Welcome!
GUESTS
Guest
Speaker, Ally Manthorne.
MAKE-UPS
- Pam B attended the Truro Club last week where she picked up a couple of fundraising ideas which she passed along to President Ken;
- The Projects Committee met;
- Pam H. attended a club in District 7820. Our clubs were similar, having a good gender balance. The sang the “Rotary Song” and she met a group called The Mother Puckers (who are all hockey moms);
- Both Josh and Ove attended the Amherst Club. Their guest speaker spoke on the Waste Disposal System;
- Wayne and six other Sackville Rotarians (names given to Barb J) attended the Rotary fundraising activities in Dieppe.
BIRTHDAYS
Although
there are no ‘official’ birthdays this coming week; Pam B does have one coming
up and she’ll not be with us (those Snowbirds!). A pre-birthday send-off was decided. Hats off…(hat-on?)...to Pam!! Enjoy Florida!!
ANNIVERSARIES: None
50/50 DRAW
I
didn’t catch the amount, but George took home the prize J.
Congrats!
HAPPY DOLLARS
George…Cha-ching$$!
Cathy
will be a Grandma on Monday!
Ken
tossed in two for Linda…who celebrated her 60th yesterday (hardly
believable, btw) and Ken did the laundry!
Second dollar was for her upcoming retirement on Tuesday. Awesome!
Elizabeth
contributed a good/bad dollar, telling us that she has accepted a new position
within RBC (congrats!) but will only remain in Sackville for another 6-12
months (boo!).
Apologies
to Ove, whom I couldn’t hear very well… I think he was apologizing for having
his cell phone go off last week during Rotary, only to find out that he grabbed
Pat’s phone. Of course, Pat called her
number to see where she put her phone!
Something like that…
Barb J was happy that Pam B sported our birthday hat.
Charlie
informed us that the Drew Nursing Home will be closed for the next 10
days. Laing, unfortunately, got the
infection that was spreading and needed medical attention. He is back but cannot go anywhere and cannot
receive any visitors. Laing isn’t too
thrilled with the set-up. Poor Laing.
Andy
was happy to have gone smelt fishing with his son AND he’s off on a snowmobile
trip to the Gaspe this weekend. Have
fun!!
Trish
is suppose to be flying to Newfoundland tomorrow and is hoping the pending
storm doesn’t not reek any havoc on that plan.
Dianne
attended Sackville’s Sports Appreciation Night at the Civic Center on Wednesday
night and had a great time!
Pam
B was delayed in heading out to Florida due to some squirrels wanting to reside
with her. The problem has been fixed and
Pam heads out this week. “See you in
April!”
Pam H heads out to Temptation and Whatever (in the Dominican) on Wednesday where she’ll be assisting other Rotarians to install water filtration systems in these two villages. Bonus: her son, Kent, will be joining her this year. Pam also wants to bring eight soccer balls for the schools and has asked the club to sponsor $200 for this. She has left the request with President Ken.

Good
news! Matching Grant funds for the Bill
Gates/Eradication of Polio challenge has been met with Rotarians raising over
$200,000,000! There have been no new
reported cases in India this year. Pam H
informed us that Gates donated another $50 million! Unimaginable!
The
following stats come from our district newsletter (December):
- Afghanistan 47 cases of polio
- India only 1
- Nigeria has 42
- Pakistan is reduced to 136
- Non – endemic countries 276
- Total of 502 reported cases of polio
Ken gave credit where credit is due informing us that, while Pam H makes light of her contributions, she was the person whom raised the funds for Bio-sands. Kudos, Pam!
Our
annual Wine Tasting even is coming up soon.
Although Gayle has agreed to organize this huge event, it is a club
job! There is lots of work, everyone
needs to lend a hand, and say ‘yes’ to whatever you are asked to do.
Have a great week!
