PRESIDENT'S TIME

Filling in for President Ken, Vice President Trish informed us that there was nothing more to add that wasn't already mentioned.

GUEST SPEAKER

Robin introduced our guest speaker, David Lieske, informing us that he has been her neighbour, her friend, and her colleague.  David originates from Edmonton and attended University of Alberta for his Bachelors degree, University of Saskatchewan for his Masters, and University of Calgary for his Ph.D.

Image

David is a geographer of geo systems, otherwise known as Neo-Cartography or mapping.

David opened with a big thank you to our club for having him as our guest speaker.  Quickly moving on to having us think of a map and what we would find on one.  Us early birds didn't do too bad coming up with having a fixed scale, 2-dimentional, with a coordinate system and a legend.

Dave now says..."look beyond"... GPS/G15...computers...giving the possibilities of other dimensions...

Visualization needs to be novell with some abstraction and ambiguity.

Communication focus for the public does not consist of much interaction but provides a framework for thinking about problems - visual database and patterns which stimulates discussion of "why?" and  "what if?".  David then provided examples with Hurricane Irene and Mount Allison in 3D with explanations.

Climate change is a spatial problem.  One of these is the rising tides and our current dyke system.  The dykes should be a community investment in order to decrease the risk involved with these rising tides.  There are currently regional predictions.  David's team's goal is to measure through the capacity of mapping to lessen these risks.  This type of mapping allows the public to 'see' what the impact will be should the dykes not be upgraded.  A web-based prototype map has been created.

Sea levels have been measured since 1939.  The animation on the map tracks this time-line and predicts future sea levels.  Sacvkille has several low areas which would end up under water.

Ending the same way he started, David left us with the following questions:  What are we going to do about it?  The dykes are maintained somewhat with a limited budget.  It is expensive to maintain the dykes and the budget will need to be reviewed.  Can we fix?  Do we need other (new) systems?

Mary thanked David for his presentation, informing him of the book that would be donated to a local library on behalf of Sackville Rotary, in his honour.
