  • There will be a Zone meeting in Moncton on November 12th entitled Getting to Know Rotary Better.  This is an all-day event held at the Lion’s Center.  Both Pam B. and Ken have the information if anyone is interested.
  • As a plug for our beautiful countryside, President Ken encouraged members to “vote for Fundy”!

GUEST SPEAKER

Writer’s Note:  You’ll have to forgive the write-up on today’s presentation.  I couldn’t hear Peter’s introduction and it was the fastest presentation I have ever had to record!  Apologies.

Here we go…

ImagePeter introduced Katie Friars and absent Woody Thompson as today’s guest speakers.  One of them has the title of Director of EOS Eco-energy (I think).

Katie came to give a presentation on The Solar Hot Water Campaign: Info Session.

They would like to have community involvement.  There are two systems 1) Hot water; 2) Recovery.  These are designed to make costs cheaper for the homeowner.  About 20-30%.

Solar energy from the sun (SDHSW) is how it is powered.  It works by absorbing the sun which create cells of energy to turn the pump.  Then through the pump into a storage tank to your heated water.  See picture.  There is also an auxiliary tank as a back-up.

Location for installation (of solar panel) needs to be ‘right’.  It’s usually on the roof but sometimes on the ground.

System 2 (DWHRS) is the heat recovery through drain water.  This is an easy transfer of heat as it creates a consistent in-take/out-take of water.  Continuous.  Copper materials is used to transfer heat to coils.

Both systems use less electricity, give-off fewer gas emissions, and is better for the environment.  There is about a 60% annual reduction, or an average of $186 per year with System #1 (SDHWS; while System #2 (DWHRS) saves 30%, or $93 annually.

Other incentives for purchasing these products are the discounts offered by the Provincial and Federal governments.  Essentially System #1 costs $2,013 and System #2 costs $258.  Installation costs are $1,600 and $300-$400.

Steps to get involved are…

  • State your interest before November 30th;
  • Site assessment will be completed with confirmed costs;
  • Contact Efficiency New Brunswick;
  • Installation;

Angie left us with the following tips on reducing energy costs:

  • Buy energy-efficient shower heads – reduces by 60%;
  • Wash cloths in cold water;
  • Purchase Energy Star dishwashers;
  • Install faucet aerators;
  • Insulate your pipes;

Check out Renewables NB via online and check out what other people do to save energy and their experiences.

Felix asked about the solar panels.  Angie informed us that they are thermo dynamic and must meet certain standards.

Gayle (either asked or informed us) that there is also a cost of pre-assessment of $150 and a follow-up for the amount of $110.  These are required.  She has seen 30-year-old solar systems still working.  They last with little maintenance.

Pat and Sue P both said they have had one since the 70s with no problems.

Sign-up sheets and brochures were provided.

ImageWynn thanked Angie and explained our way of thanking our guest speakers.

 President Ken adjourned with the stating of the 4-Way Test.
