Dianne’s pin pal occurred in Amherst at the Tantramar Theatre where she spotted an “old, old, old” pin being worn by Bett Douglas.

50/50 DRAW $12.00

John drew…I didn’t have who won written down in my notes…then I remembered I won.  Hurray!  Thanks, John!

HAPPY DOLLARS

Though it may not have seemed it (Dianne), Karen was happy to have won 50/50 and happy to be at Rotary.

Cathy followed up with her Meat Camp experience and told us that, despite the terrible weather, they had a great time and ended up coming in 3rd place for their wings and 1st for their ribs.  Congrats!!!  What time is supper??

Wayne and his Relay for Life teammates were all sporting their t-shirts this morning.  Wayne thanked all those for their support.

Barb J was one of those teammates…She is also happy that the Town paved a walkway by her house.

Pam B. excited announced the arrival of her grand-daughter, Erica Lee (who is the most beautiful baby in the whole wide world).

Dale is grateful that his step-daughter and her family (narrowly) escaped their recent fire.  Count thy blessings…

Dianne is now a ‘great’ aunt for Patrick James.  Just to clarify…Dianne was ALWAYS a GREAT aunt, she’s now a GREAT great-aunt.

PRESIDENT’S TIME

Ken presented Rotarian Barb Jardine with a year-end recognition award.  Barb was not in town when presentation were made.

GUEST SPEAKER

Pam H. introduced this morning’s guest speaker, our own Rotarian Su Coish, by telling us a little tale “Once upon a time…” (with slideshow) about how Su joined Rotary.  Pam mentioned the fact that it was Vocational Month, it was so appropriate for Su to be giving her Classification Talk on her vocation.

Writer’s note:  I will never be able to capture, in written words, the enthusiasm that Su incorporated into her presentation.

Su is an Advertising Consultant for Trans Continental – Canada’s leading news.  She currently works out of the Tribune Post.  Today, she decided to share…

The Secrets of Advertising

The Sackville Tribune Post is the only source for Sackville.  It is also the only local newspaper that have national advertisers.  Trans Continental either publish or print over 11,000 magazines per year.  In the printing sector alone – it’s 50 million.  They also have 300 different websites.  Simply stated, Irving sells.  Everyone sells for them and they make profit.  Once per year a big party is held in Montreal.

Why advertise?

To increase sales and to generate a response.

There are 3 secrets…

  • Know yourself and your target market;
  • Frequency;
  • Know what you’re selling;

Su then put President Ken on the spot for an exercise.  Who are you?  What is your business?  Where do you advertise?  Who is your competition? (Ken, by the way, did an excellent job at the answers!).

Su establishes a 12-month goal for her clients and offers unique selling propositions.

Consistency and frequency:

Branding power, today versus tomorrow’s customers.

Su went on to say that consistency equals familiarity and that, in turn, equals trust.  Her experience shows that it takes two months of advertising to establish trust.  She always recommends that businesses book three months of advertising.

Right Message?

The Sackville Tribune Post is known as “The little paper that could.”

Are you finding a ‘pain’ (in your customers?);

Good ads versus bad ads;

The advertisement should be about the customer – not you (business);

For example: Are your kitchen cupboards outdated?  Try instead: “We have the best updated kitchen cupboards…”

Top 10 Reasons to Advertise:

  • Contacts;
  • Preference;
  • Educate and develop (e.g. SOLD signs);
  • Close the sale;
  • Effective sales tool;
  • Keeps business in mind;

Su told us a story about Blairlyn and the owner’s lack of wanting to advertise.  In the end, he saw what advertising can do for his business (increase customers, increase profit, allows flexibility).  EVERYONE needs to advertise.

Putting her expertise to work for our club, Su identified our club’s ‘pain’ which is that the Town is not educated on what Rotary does.  Recruitment is our objective and Su feels that we need to put our “20 Reasons to join Rotary” to good use.  This is available through Club Runner www.sackvillerotary.ca.  We also need to be “out there” selling tickets and being seen.  This is also a form of advertising.

Trish thanked Su for her invigorating presentation with a handshake and a big smile.

President Ken adjourned with the stating of the 4-Way Test.
