Sandy was in the Chair today and began the meeting with a moment of  silence for the Norwegian's killed last Friday, in what is surly one of the world's great tragedies.  There were no Visiting Rotarians but guests of Rotarians were Katrine's host parent and host sister along with former Rotarian Patricia Beliveau.

In the make up department, John took time to visit a Club in New Hampshire four time while vacationing.  Seems the weather was much better - mostly sun.  John wasn't impressed with our rain.

Ove will celebrate "the big one" on the 31st although he didn't specify how big,  Inquiring minds want to know!

Ove's 70th Birthday (WinCE)   Also celebrating a birthday while she was crossing the country on the RYE cross Canada tour was Katrine.  Katrine's Birthday (WinCE)

John and Gemy are celebrating an anniversary on the 30th as are Brian and Carol on the 3rd.

This weeks Pin Pal story from Pam B. detailed one of her Dragon boat buddies who indicated he was a Rotarian (HRM club I think).  Their most recent fundraiser netted a cool $45,000.  They fall down however, on the RYE front - they only have one student.

Well Darrell finally won the 50/50 draw - - - - again!

However he was happy at "being in the money."..........Wynn was elated to indicate that two of his grand children were in the finals of a recent track and field event.

Wynn (WinCE) ........Ove noted how the recent events in Norway showcased their command of the English language  Scandivan Twins (WinCE)  as evidenced by these Scandinavian  twins.  Ove was also happy to learn that his daughter Anna and her husband (both pilots) are being transferred to Toronto - a whole lot closer than the current Vancouver............Dianne was really, really happy that Sackville won last weeks Kraft challenge (rumor has it by 20,000 + votes).  The party will be on August 26th at 5:00 pm at the Swan Pond and volunteers are requested.........Leslie was beaming as son Bryson is journeying back to Sackville for some R & R.  Seems he is bringing his special friend............Charlie was amazed that after many months, the lost has been found.  Mary found Charlie's "breakfast apron" at the United Church.  His initials were inside, so there was no doubt whose apron it was. Charlie and Missing Apron (WinCE).........John was happy/sad as it was nice to be back home, but he didn't need to see, and hadn't seen rain in at least 5 weeks......Wayne once again was soliciting members for the Rotary Relay For Life team.  The race is in October........Darren notified that cook and chief bottle washer Molly will be playing her music at the Bandstand tonight.  Darren (WinCE).........Sandy was happy as she and Wayne will be leaving on Sunday for a holiday at their son's cottage at Long Point ON.

The duty roster for next week is as follows:

  • Chair                 Trish
  • Introducer         Ken
  • Thanker            Pam B.
  • Greeter             Wynn

On behalf of the Fundraising Committee, Gayle indicated that the tickets for the Golf Ball Drop (now called the Roll) will be available soon.  She advised members to "line up" their buyers.........Trish indicated that the next Project Committee meeting will be on August 31st at her house (50 Landsdowne St.).  She also circulated a card from Heather Simpson thanking the Club for sponsorship to Camp Tidnish........Dianne, on behalf of the RYE Committee advised members that this will be Katrine's last meeting as she heads home tomorrow (Friday the 29th).  Our new students arrive on August 20th and 22nd.

Ken indicated that the next Executive Meeting will be postponed until August 11th, to coincide with the District Governor's visit.

Our guest speaker was our outgoing RYE student Katrine, eloquently introduced by John.  Katrine gave us a consolidated view of her recent Cross Canada tour with other District Rye students.  Starting in Shediac the tour quickly embarked on a ride to Quebec City, where once there, they relived their Kindergarten experience by holding on to a yellow rope.  Then it was off to Montreal, a favorite of Katrine.  She likened Montreal to many cities in Europe.  While there, they attended a jazz festival.  Soon they left for the Nation's Capital - Ottawa where they got to see Prince William and Kate.  They experienced the whole spectacular that is July 1st in the Capital.  Then off to Toronto where a visit to the Bata Shoe Factory Museum was a highlight.  A visit to Niagara Falls left no doubt as to who has the better falls - us or the USA.  Soon it was back on the train for three days to Edmonton and the West Edmonton Mall, the former largest mall in the world.  The Calgary Stampede was "cool" in Calgary as was a visit to Lake Louise.  It was a picture of Lake Louise that prompter her to want to come to Canada for her exchange.  After the hot springs in Banff, it was off to Vancouver and Victoria, where there is no such thing as summer.

Katrine finished with a tribute to all that Rotary does to make this tour possible for the exchange students.  She indicated that it was amazing to see all of Canada, even though it is hard to fathom the expanse of this country.  She ended by thanking all members for the great time she had in Sackville.  It was fitting that another Ex Scandinavian (Ove) got to thank her for talk.
