Rotary Club of Sackville Bulletin May 2, 2019

Wynn substituted for Jamie in the Chair this week.  He recalled a mention by last week’s speaker of the old Allison Gardens and the general-purpose room within.  Wynn and Sharon used to teach ballroom dancing in the 70’s & 80’s.  He also recalled doing a demo dance at one of the last big fundraisers of the ‘80’s – Gala Night.
The Club welcomed guests Tina Hicks (Gold Mine winner) and Christoph Becker, this week’s speaker.  There were no visiting Rotarians, although the Club welcomed the Portuguese wanderer, Pam, back after her winter away.
Makeups occurred from the Gold Mine volunteers and those who worked and attended the Spring Bash.
The Pin Pal stories were real this week.  Dale was in Washington DC at the Smithsonian Institute when he spotted a gal who had a cell phone cover with the Rotary wheel on it.  She was a local Rotarian.  Josh’s wife suggested to him that there might be a Rotarian in the Toronto airport last week.  Josh went to investigate and came upon Pam, returning from Europe.
There were no visiting Rotarians or Birthdays this week.
George, who was sick and by himself, had his ticket drawn this week.  Looking for the Ace of Spades and $35, he bombed out with the King of Clubs.  Get well soon!
Seems like 5 members were Happy this week.  Trish kicked it off by indicating that her parents wanted to thank the Club for their hospitality during their recent visit………Morgan was happy to announce that today was Israel’s Remembrance Day………Wynn was doubly happy – May is here so the golf course will be opening soon and he thanked the volunteers who volunteered to be the Chair this week………Marita was happy to break in the new truck by a visit to the valley this week………Dianne was happy that the Spring bash was over.  She also indicated that she had Darrell’s apron.
This week we presented 2 cheques for Gold mine winners.  First, Tina Hicks accepted her cheque for $1,300 for winning the draw this week.  Secondly, our speaker picked up a cheque for $673 as the charity (Port Elgin Regional School) for the February 25th draw.
Duty Roster for May 9th Meeting:
Chair          John                   Greeter          Mary
Introducer Ove                      Thanker         Tammy (need alternative)
Meetings next week – Club Admin, Tuesday 1:30 pm at Wayne & Sandy’s and Bulletin Sub Committee this evening at Wayne’s.
In the first of three Committee Reports, Darrell reported that the preliminary profit of the Spring bash was $6,597…….Trish reported that she will be visiting Community Forests International to present them with a cheque for $5,000……..Pam indicate that there are still 4 places available for a friendship exchange to Sweden.  She also reminded members of the June 1st “End Polio Walk”.
Our guest speaker, Christoph Becker, Principal of Port Elgin Regional School, was introduced by Morgan.  A former student himself, he now has the top job at the School.  Christoph wanted to indicate to the Club, how the school spends the Gold Mine money it received last year.  To say that he is shaking up the traditional teaching methods would be an understatement.  New programs were begun after surveys and consultations with the student.  The results are very positive.  In particular, the school purchased 4 desk/seat combo chairs that are fully intergradable with each other.  Long term plans are to revitalize the school cafeteria.
Trish thanked Christoph with a certificate and pen.  A book will be donated to a local library in his name.
The meeting concluded with the 4-way-test
